DiamondBack Truck Covers Returns to Penn State to Inspire the Next Generation of Engineers

DiamondBack Truck Covers, a company that began as a class project at Penn State, recently visited the university to share its entrepreneurial journey and connect with engineering students. Founded in an Engineering Entrepreneurship course, DiamondBack has grown into an award-winning business and a model for how innovation can thrive through academic collaboration and real-world problem-solving.
Engaging Freshmen: A Day of Inspiration
During their visit, the DiamondBack team presented to more than 600 students enrolled in the EDesign 100 course. Over the course of the day, they shared their story, emphasizing the journey from a Penn State classroom to becoming Pennsylvania’s 2019 Small Business of the Year. Students heard firsthand how the company started when co-founder Matt Chverchko had his equipment stolen from his truck, inspiring him and his classmate Ethan Wendle to create a secure, load-bearing truck cover as their class project.
The DiamondBack team emphasized the benefits of working at smaller to midsize companies, where employees can gain more autonomy, take on greater responsibility, and make a meaningful impact. They encouraged students to explore entrepreneurial paths early in their careers, connecting their own experiences with the opportunities available at Penn State.
Hands-On Engagement: Showcasing DiamondBack’s Products
To make their visit even more impactful, DiamondBack set up a booth in the lobby where students could engage directly with representatives and learn about job and internship opportunities. Outside, they displayed three trucks, including one with the original prototype cover that started it all, allowing students to see their product development journey up close.

The team also held a raffle for a YETI cooler, attracting students and creating excitement around their presentation. DiamondBack is actively seeking interns and engineers, highlighting the practical opportunities available for students interested in becoming part of their team.
Continuing the Connection: Upcoming Events
This visit is just one part of DiamondBack’s ongoing engagement with Penn State. The team plans to return in November, this time focusing on upperclassmen. They aim to deepen their relationship with Penn State’s engineering community, providing more targeted insights and career pathways for students as they progress in their academic journeys.
A Legacy of Entrepreneurial Success
DiamondBack’s visit to campus serves as both a celebration of its roots and a reminder of the value of entrepreneurial spirit and education. With a manufacturing plant located in Philipsburg, PA, and plans to expand their facilities, DiamondBack is growing rapidly, offering Penn State students opportunities to join a dynamic company that values innovation, customer satisfaction, and employee well-being. By staying true to their mission, the company continues to be a beacon of success for aspiring engineers and entrepreneurs at Penn State.
